Never underestimate a good backyard - yours, a relative's, or a friend's. It's personal, it's free, and it gives you total control over the vibe (string lights, a long farm table, a dog in a bow tie — whatever you want!)

With $5K to work with, a backyard celebration might look like a private chef or a beloved local food truck handling the meal, a handful of rentals (tables, chairs, linens, maybe a tent for peace of mind), and your own beer, wine, and a signature cocktail set up at a self-serve bar. Because you're not paying a venue fee, more of your budget lands directly on the plates and in the glasses. Just keep an eye on guest count so the space stays comfortable, and check whether your neighborhood has any noise or end-time considerations.

2.THE APARTMENT COMMON ROOM OR ROOFTOP

If you live in a building with a bookable amenity space - a club room, a lounge, a rooftop with a skyline view - you may be sitting on one of DC's best-kept wedding secrets. These spaces often rent to residents for a modest fee (sometimes free), and a DC rooftop at golden hour is a priceless backdrop.

Confirm your building's rules early - capacity limits, whether outside vendors and alcohol are permitted, and how far in advance you can reserve. With the space itself costing little, your $5K stretches comfortably across food, drinks, and a few thoughtful touches.

3.LARGE PARTY RESERVATION AT YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT

Maybe hosting isn't your thing - and that's more than okay. Booking a large-party reservation or a semi-private room at a restaurant you already love is one of the easiest, lowest-stress ways to celebrate. Someone else cooks, someone else pours, someone else clears the plates, and you simply get to be married and present.

For large party reservations, they’ll typically charge a flat per person rate with a prix fix menu. Bonus: zero setup, zero cleanup, zero rentals. You could also skip dinner all together! Open up a tab at a restbar and let your friends and family order what they want!

Since a large party reservation most likely won’t allow space for a ceremony, we have a short list of locations in DC that offer ceremony only rentals with low rental fees! (One as cheap as $90 for two hours!)
