A Sustainable, Coastal Italian Backyard Micro Wedding in Washington, DC

Some of our favorite micro weddings don't happen in traditional venues or grand estates. They happen at home in a backyard the couple already loves, surrounded by the people who matter most to them. This intimate DC micro wedding is exactly that kind of magic: twelve guests, a private chef, a vintage bathtub full of wine, and a garden glowing with candlelight as the sun went down.
It's proof that "intimate" doesn't mean "scaled back." It means every single detail gets to be personal.
A Backyard, Transformed
The setting was the couple's own Washington DC backyard: a classic city lot framed by a brick-and-wrought-iron fence, with mature trees overhead and a brick rowhome as the backdrop. With a guest list this small, there was no need for a venue at all. The space they lived and loved in became the event space.
A single long table ran down the center of the lawn, dressed in a natural linen tablecloth with soft taupe linen napkins. Wooden cross-back chairs with tie-on cushions lined both sides, and at each place sat a speckled rose-rimmed plate, wood-handled flatware, clear glassware, and a printed menu card. Cream and taupe taper candles - some smooth, some twisted - stood in clusters down the table, ready to be lit as the light faded.
Because it's DC and weather is never a guarantee, the couple kept a tent with one of our partner vendors on standby - the kind of quiet, smart planning that lets you relax and enjoy the day no matter what the forecast says.
Cocktail Hour, Garden-Party Style
Guests arrived to a cocktail hour that felt like the loveliest dinner party. Our vendor partner, Chef Jordan of DCEatings, set the tone with a meal that was as beautiful as it was delicious.
First, the crudité board - and what a board it was. Rainbow carrots, watermelon radish, cucumber, and ribbons of purple and white endive fanned out around a creamy white anchovy bean dip, finished with bright edible pansies in blue, yellow, and deep burgundy and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Alongside it, a whipped feta crostini topped with apricot preserves and a sprig of basil: that perfect sweet-and-savory bite! Guests loved it so much we hardly had time to grab a proper photo of the dish!
Guests gathered with drinks in hand, laughing in the late-afternoon sun under a breezy striped umbrella - exactly the easy, joyful energy a backyard does best.
The Bar: A Vintage Bathtub (and a Smart Money Move)
Here's a detail we can't stop talking about. Instead of hiring a bartender, the couple kept the bar completely self-serve and turned it into a great design moment. We sourced a vintage enamel bathtub for our couple, set it on its original folding stand, and filled it with ice, wine, and beer. Topped with a striped umbrella and tucked beside the greenery, it became one of the most charming features of the whole evening.
Nearby, the bride's own weathered gardening table did double duty as a serving station, stacked with plates and anchored by a loose, just-picked basket of wildflowers - daisies, chamomile, lavender, and airy greens spilling out of a linen-lined basket. Potted herbs and white blooms rounded out the corner.
Skipping the bartender in favor of a beautiful self-serve setup is one of the easiest ways to save money without sacrificing an ounce of style. Proof that the most budget-friendly choice can also be the most memorable one.
A Menu Made Just for Them: Coastal Italian
Dinner was a fully customized three-course meal, designed around the couple's taste with a relaxed coastal Italian vibe. Chef Jordan brought it to life with seasonal, farmers-market-fresh ingredients including herbs snipped straight from the bride's very own garden.

An arugula and cherry salad with basil lemon vinaigrette- peppery, sweet, and bright to start
Grilled zucchini and squash atop a bright green pool of Italian salsa verde alongside a roasted corn and mascarpone bucatini, all summer comfort
Roasted salmon with a fresh Puttanesca - cherry tomatoes, castelvetrano olives, capers, garlic, and herbs from the garden, spooned over the top.
Sustainable by Design: A micro Tablescape Made to Be Reused
One of the things we loved most about this micro wedding was how thoughtfully the couple built it to last beyond the day. They chose a muted, neutral color palette specifically so that everything could be used again and again.
The dishes and glassware? Gifts from their wedding registry, now part of their everyday home. The table linens and napkins were chosen in soft, timeless tones they'll reach for at every dinner party to come (and this is a couple who loves to host.) Even the candle holders were a do-it-yourself win: the bride pulled candlesticks and votives she already owned and simply spray-painted them to match the palette.
It's a beautiful reminder that "wedding decor" doesn't have to mean things you use once and toss. The most personal and sustainable celebrations are full of pieces that keep living in your home long after the last guest goes home.
Golden Hour, Candlelight, and the Toast
As the sun dropped, the backyard turned absolutely dreamy. Bistro lights strung overhead came on, dozens of candles flickered down the table, and the whole garden glowed. Glasses went up, the couple was surrounded by their closest people, and the moment was everything an intimate wedding should be: warm, unhurried, and entirely them.
