DC Venue Spotlight: DC War Memorial
An Iconic Stage on the National Mall
Tucked just off Independence Avenue, nestled between the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and the Martin Luuther King Jr. Memorial, the DC War Memorial rests among the trees of West Potomac Park. Built in 1931 to honor more than 26,000 residents of DC who served in World War I, it is a striking circular temple that is complete with Doric marble columns and a domed canopy. It is way less crowded than the big name landmarks, offering a genuinely calming background for a small wedding ceremony.
Every micro wedding at the DC War Memorial has a full history behind it. Dedicated on Armistice Day by President Herbert Hoover, the memorial honors local World War I veterans by listing their names alphabetically on that shiny marble base. It is a rare local monument on the National Mall and remains a hushed, poignant site for reflection.
What you can Expect
Before you fall in love with the idea (unless you already have), here’s the practical scoop. You do need a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service to hold your ceremony here, but compared to traditional venues, it is refreshingly straightforward and affordable. You will reserve the site in two hour blocks for $90, including setup, cleanup, and permission to take photos during that window. The permit even includes photography privileges for the memorial grounds for no extra fee.
First come, first served is the rule with permits. The Permits Office (NPS) is open Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm. Start by giving them a quick phone call to check for availability, then submit your application via mail, fax, or in person. It is best to apply early, especially if you are eyeing a Saturday during spring or fall.
During that time, you can choose to have your ceremony either inside the memorial, where 50 guests can be accommodated under the dome, or on the lawn for a slightly larger guest count. Inside the memorial, the acoustics are so great you likely won’t need amplified sound at all, just your regular voices and maybe some string instruments if you’d like extra sound.
This space is also rain friendly! Ceremonies held inside the dome stay dry and lovely even when the weather doesn’t want to cooperate.
The Mall and The Potomac
One of the most compelling advantages about this venue is its location. The memorial is among the most tranquil of the National Mall’s ceremony sites, though you are still steps away from the mall, the Potomac River, and the Jefferson Memorial. You get iconic scenery without feeling completely overrun by crowds.

Since the DC War Memorial is a ceremony only site, couples often choose to have a dinner reception at a restaurant nearby. Luckily, DC is full of options that feel just right for a tiny wedding reception. Here are some of our favorites for an after ceremony celebration following the DC War memorial:
1789
Inside of a federal style townhouse, 1789 is one of Georgetown’s iconic fine dining restaurants. The rooms here are filled with fireplaces, woodwork, and artwork that give this restaurant an almost private club atmosphere. The menu here leans American and seasonal paired with impeccable wine service and top notch hospitality. Just a 10 minute drive from the memorial, it’s the kind of place where a long, intimate dinner feels like an occasion.
Del Mar
If you want your reception to be colorful and more celebratory, Del Mar at The Wharf is a great spot. The dining room looks over the water, with big windows that make it glow at sunset. It serves coastal Spanish cuisine like seafood paella, tapas, and cocktails all with a different personality. It is glamorous, a little theatrical, and very festive, ideal for couples looking for a true fiesta.
Officina
Also at The Wharf, Officina gives couples a sleek look with rustic Italian style. Multiple levels offer multiple moods and private dining spaces that can be tailored to your group. The menu is rooted in Italian tradition with some modern touches, so expect homemade pasta, gorgeous meats, and a strong wine list. It is a classic, relaxed evening that is perfect to celebrate with family and friends.
