There are weddings you plan for, and then there are weddings that plan you. K & J's wedding, this past July, was the second kind and it's the one we still can't stop talking about.
Thirteen people: immediate family and the bride's closest girlfriends, nothing more. An all-white palette of garden roses, ranunculus and Queen Anne's lace. A rooftop ceremony at the Gold Coast Ambassador Hotel that had been the plan for months. And then, on the morning of the wedding, Chicago woke up under a sky that didn't look like Chicago at all.
Wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada had settled over the city, and by the time we arrived on-site, the air quality had tipped into genuinely hazardous territory - exactly the kind of day where the skyline disappears into a flat, pale wall of haze. The rooftop, gorgeous as it was, was no longer an option for the ceremony itself.
This is the part of micro wedding planning nobody puts on the mood board: the pivot. With thirteen guests and a couple who had their hearts set on that rooftop, we moved the ceremony indoors within the hour - florals, seating and all - without the couple needing to spend a single minute worrying about it. That's the whole point of hiring a coordinator who can work on the fly: not that nothing ever goes wrong, but that when it does, the couple never has to know how close it came.

What the smoke didn't get to touch was the ceremony itself. Moved indoors, flanked by low white arrangements, it was every bit as intimate as thirteen people promises: quiet, close, and unmistakably built around this couple and no one else. The groom stood in uniform with a single white rose pinned to his lapel and the bride wore a pearl-strapped silk gown and a veil that caught the light streaming through the windows. Vows were exchanged holding hands, laughing before they'd even finished, in front of the only people who mattered.
A SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT + a reveal the couple didnt see coming
Immediately after the ceremony, the couple gathered their small guest list including both sets of parents and made an announcement: they were expecting! It was news to every single person in that room, parents included, and the photos of that exact second are some of our favorites we've ever taken. Hands flew up, jaws dropped, the bride’s best friend burst into tears before the sentence was even finished. It was a moment we’ll never forget!
If that had been the only surprise of the day, it would have been enough. Instead, the couple topped it at the reception with a gender reveal - and in the most unusual twist, they'd chosen not to find out the sex of the baby themselves. Instead, a close friend learned the answer from their doctor and passed it along to our team in confidence, so we could quietly order a cake with the color baked inside. Nobody on-site knew what was in that cake.
When the first slice came out pink, the room erupted. “It's a girl!”

We talk a lot about intimacy when we talk about micro weddings, but days like this one are the real argument for it. With thirteen people in the room instead of a hundred and thirty, there's room for two enormous, unscripted announcements in a single afternoon and for every single person present to actually feel it happen, together, in real time. There's also room for a coordinator to move an entire ceremony indoors in under an hour when the sky itself doesn't cooperate, without the couple losing a minute of their day to logistics. We we able to make a last minute change, one that would have been impossible to make with 100+ guests.
The couple got a wedding that looked nothing like the one they planned that morning, and exactly like the one they'll tell their daughter about for the rest of her life. Smoke and all.
