Apply for a Marriage License in Washington DC

To apply for the marriage license, you can do so two ways:

  • Visit the Marriage Bureau  (Room JM-690; Moultrie Courthouse) and complete a paper application: Marriage License Application. (This is the fastest way and what we recommend!)

  • Submit the application online  - A court staff member will contact you once the application has been received. At least one of the two parties is required to come to the Marriage Bureau to pick up the license, complete payment and show Identification and proof of age for both parties.

In all instances, you must show proof of age for both parties through one of the following documents:

  • US valid driver’s license

  • Government-issued non-driver’s ID

  • Passport

The marriage license application fee is $45.00. All fees must be paid in cash, credit card or by check or money order (made payable to Clerk, DC Superior Court.)

The Marriage license can be issued the same day you apply if all required information is included in the application, along with officiant name (if you’ve hired The Tiny Wedding Shop, ask us for your officiant’s name and MAS number,) payment, and proof of age documents. Once issued, a marriage license does not expire.
