How to Apply for a Marriage License in Virginia

General Info for Virginia Marriage License:
Marriage licenses are issued by the Clerk of the Circuit Court, and there is one for each county in Virginia.
Couples do not need to be a resident of Virginia to obtain a marriage license in Virginia.
Couples may obtain a marriage license from any circuit court in Virginia.
The marriage license is valid for 60 calendar days and the marriage must take place in Virginia.
Apply for a Marriage License in Northern Virginia
For online, fill out an Online Marriage License Pre-Application to be found for Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, and Alexandria.
In-person appointments can be made. See county’s guidelines to see if walk-ins are welcome or appointments are necessary.
Receive your Marriage License in Northern Virginia
If you filled out a form online, you can request for video appointment for a marriage license. After completion, the license will be mailed to you. See county’s guidelines for further instructions.
You can also pick-up the license at the Clerk of the Circuit Court. See county’s guidelines for hours of operation.
In all instances, you must show proof of age for both parties through one of the following documents:
US valid driver’s license
Government-issued non-driver’s ID
Passport
In addition, you will be required to supply your social security number of both applicants, card is not necessary. The marriage license application fee is $30.00 via cash or credit card. There may be processing fees applied for credit card transactions.

The clergy, minister, or other person performing the marriage must be authorized by a Circuit Court of the Commonwealth to celebrate the rites of matrimony.
