A Goodstone Inn Micro Wedding in Middleburg, Virginia
Some venues you love from afar for years. For us, Goodstone Inn was one of them. So when S+C asked us to be part of their September micro wedding at Goodstone, we may have done a small happy dance in the office. Then we got to work.
Eighteen guests, one garden ceremony with a view that goes on forever and a dinner table glowing with candlelight under a canopy of wisteria. It was everything a Middleburg micro wedding should be: elegant, personal, and completely unhurried.
Why Goodstone Inn Is Made for Micro Weddings
Goodstone Inn & Restaurant sits on a 265-acre estate just outside Middleburg, Virginia, in the heart of horse and wine country, and about an hour from Washington, DC. It's a working farm, a luxury country inn, and a celebrated restaurant all in one, and that combination is exactly why it works so well for small weddings.
Here's what makes Goodstone special when your guest list is short:
Every space feels proportional. Big estates can swallow a small group. Goodstone's garden rooms, ivy-covered stone walls, and pergola feel like they were designed for 20 people, not 200.
Everyone can stay on property. With 18 suites and cottages across the estate, a micro wedding at Goodstone can feel like a private weekend house party.
The food is the main event. Goodstone's farm-to-table kitchen draws on its own gardens, orchard and farm. With 18 guests, dinner can be a true multi-course experience, not banquet fare.
The views do the decorating. Rolling fields, horse fencing, and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the horizon mean you need very little added décor.
It's close but feels far. Guests drive in from DC and feel like they've escaped to the English countryside.
Getting Ready in the Stallion Suite
Our bride got ready in the Stallion Suite, one of Goodstone's guest rooms. White shiplap walls, original wood floors, and soft window light made getting-ready photos effortless. Her bouquet set the tone for the day: stock and baby's breath in pure white, loose and airy, with just a hint of green.
She paired a strapless satin gown with a sheer chiffon cape and a sparkling crystal headpiece. Our groom kept it classic in a navy suit with an ivory striped tie and white pocket square. Against Goodstone's painted green paneling, it was pure country-estate polish.
This is one of our favorite things about getting ready on property; no rushing across town, no traffic, no stress. Just a walk out the door to the ceremony.
A Garden Ceremony with a View
The ceremony took place in the garden beside the pool, framed by boxwood hedges and open fields that roll toward the tree line. With only 18 guests, two short rows of white chiavari chairs were all it took. Each seat held a sage-green fan engraved with the couple's names, a pretty and practical nod to a warm September evening.
Our bride walked in with her mom on one arm and her maid of honor at her side, in a flowing mint chiffon gown. Then came the vows, the rings, and a shower of white rose petals from guests close enough to see every expression.
That's the magic of a micro wedding. Nobody is in the back row. Everyone is part of the moment.
Golden Hour Across the Estate
After the ceremony, S+C slipped away for portraits as the sun dropped. This is where Goodstone really shows off. Within a few minutes' walk, you get the Carriage House with its arched windows, flowering gardens, wide-open hayfields, and a winding farm road with the barns and silo in the distance.
A small guest list buys you time, too. Fewer formal group photos means more time to wander the estate and actually enjoy each other.
An All-White Palette That Let Goodstone Shine
The couple chose an all-white palette, and we think it was the right call. White linens, white chairs, white candles, and white florals let the deep greens of Goodstone's ivy walls and wisteria do the talking. The only accents came from soft sage and mint: the ceremony fans, the maid of honor's dress, and the green ribbons tied to the chairs.
If you're planning a Goodstone Inn wedding, take note. This venue doesn't need heavy décor - florals and candles will do the trick. A restrained palette looks timeless here and photographs beautifully.
A Candlelit Dinner Under the Pergola
After cocktails by the pool, guests moved to dinner under the pergola. Picture an old stone wall wrapped in ivy, ancient wisteria vines twisting up wooden posts, and café lights strung overhead. One long table ran down the center, so all 18 guests could sit together.
The table was dressed in textured ivory linen, layered with taper candles in tall glass hurricanes, pillars, and votives. Tiny cobalt-blue glass charms marked each place setting, the only pop of color all evening. As the sky darkened, the candlelight took over and the whole space glowed.
Then came the toasts. There were happy tears, long hugs, and plenty of glasses raised across the table. When you're seated at one long table with your favorite people, dinner stops feeling like a reception and starts feeling like a family celebration.
